A New Year, a Soul Mate and a Life Purpose

It’s new year’s eve, over the next few days most people are going to feel the freshness of the new year–a new number, a clean slate–and think about their deficiencies and how they will overcome them, all summed up in the treacherous word resolutions. I did for it many a new year. It’s energizing to feel the newness, never mind that it was just a number in my head.

This year I forsake resolutions in favor of evolutions.

Why are we so often dragged into the belief that there is the “right one” out there waiting for us, or that we can find our calling, some special vocation designed to fit our peculiarities? Reality would indicate otherwise. Animals must change as their environment changes. They can’t wait around for just the right food source, hoping that they will find their true calling. In the absence of one food source, they will try to find another. When we see a species that has indeed found it’s calling,we rarely consider the generations of work it took to get it to that place.

Is there a soul mate for each of us? I think there are many: good matches that feel so right they seem made to order. Each one would be different, a play on the theme of ‘good match’.

Is it the same with life purpose? I think it is. Otherwise, seeking a single perfect fit is like having just a single source of food–the last time that happened it was two outlets of a single source! We need to stop being babies and rejoice in the varieties of our self.

The idea that there’s one of anything out there seems to be an attempt to control uncertainty and change. But that’s where the fun is, and in any case, that’s where the world is (ignore at your own peril).

There are multitudes of purposes. Purposes sounds too fishy, let’s make it Purpii. Go then, dig your purpii out of the ground, feel them crawling through your fingers, rejoice! And find some more. Evolve!
